BIOGRAPHY

Virginia Thorn is a classically trained singer from South East London, she composes music on vocals & guitar. “Growing up records were the most precious things in our home. During the Second World War my dad collected hundreds of jazz albums: Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald & Billie Holiday. My mum played Astor Piazzolla & Carlos Gardel from her childhood in northern Argentina. Hearing that music was the thing that made me want to sing.”

In her late teens she discovered the music of the 1960's Folk Revival. Artists from America and Canada: Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell. “As soon as I had saved enough money, I visited New York, Greenwich Village, to see all the places the folk artists had played.”

The 1960’s Folk Revivalists, drawing on the historic music and poetry of Traditional Folk and Blues, often wrote songs that sprawled many verses. “I love to get lost in music like that.” Some contemporary influences are Belle and Sebastian, Radiohead, Tom Waits, and Lhasa De Sela.

“When I am songwriting I feel like I can plug into a sense of life moving and rest in it.”
